Biography

James Edward O’Connell, 90, Savannah, passed away on Thursday, July, 7, 2011.

James was born on a farm near Maryville, Mo., on January 6, 1921. He was the first child of Jeremiah “Jerry” and Magdalen (Sullivan) O’Connell. James graduated from Maryville High School.

In 1941, James married Noma Phelps; she preceded him in death. To this union two children were born, [private] and [private].

In October 1973, he married Faye Hagerty of Savannah.

He was in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1943 thru 1946. On June 1, 1952, he was appointed acting Postmaster at Barnard, Mo., and Postmaster on May 22, 1952.

James retired from the postal service at Barnard on March 1, 1985.

He served in many civic and community organizations in the following positions: Commander and member of the American Legion Post 102, Barnard; member of the Barnard Fire Dept.; secretary and treasurer of the Barnard Cemetery Association; Mayor and City Clerk of Barnard; member and past-president of the South Nodaway R-IV School board; past president of the Lions Club, Barnard; secretary and treasurer of the Barnard Picnic Committee; secretary of the Senior Housing Corp.; and member and past-president of the Barnard Historical Society that has restored the Barnard Depot as a Museum of the past. He served as a member and State Vice-President of the National League of Postmasters of Missouri and was selected by that organization as Postmaster of the Year 1972. Jim was a member of First Christian Church in Savannah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dennis “Buck” O’Connell; sister, Rita Whitney; and an infant sister.

Additional survivors include son, [private].; daughter, [private]; sister, [private]; step daughter, [private]; several grandchildren and step grandchildren and their spouses; several great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services: 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Savannah Cemetery. The family will receive loved ones and friends prior to the services at 10 a.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Red Cross or First Christian Church of Savannah. [1]
