Biography

Mary J O'Connor was born about January 6th 1863 in Alton Illinois, the sixth of nine children. Her parents Michael O'Connor and Mary Hanley were Irish immigrants to Pennsylvania.

Mary and her brothers and sisters:

Between 1872 and 1880 the O'Connor family moved to Sioux City, Iowa.[10]

Mary's father was a carpenter and two of her brothers took up the same profession. The family home was situated on Jackson Street, between Fifth and Sixth Street.

Mary excelled in school, graduating from high school in 1881. Two years later she began teaching grade school. By 1888 she was principal of the school. Throughout her career, she was praised for her innovative approach to teaching History, and for her contributions to development of English courses. She also served as member of the school board. [11] [12] [13]

In 1900 Mary, her brother John and sister Rose, who had all remained single, were living at the family home on Jackson Street, with a boarder. [14] [15] [16]

When Mary retired around 1935, the Sioux City Journal published a first-page article praising her 54 year career.

In 1940 Mary was 78 years old, living on 19th Street in Sioux City, with her widowed sister Ellen Conner, whose children had all moved away from home. [17] That same year in August Mary succombed to breast cancer. Her nephew Philip Conner was the informant. Mary O'Connor was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. [18]
