Biography

Elery Lawrence O'Dell was born in either Butler or Quincy, Branch, Michigan to Franklin Morgan O'Dell and Mary Naomi Byard. Earlier records indicate that birthplace was Butler, but the records later in Elery's life indicate that he was born in Quincy. Quincy and Butler are several miles apart so it is not a jurisdictional change in the area, and efforts to locate a birth record are on going.

In 1900 the family was living in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan and in 1910 they were in Sheridan, Calhoun, Michigan.

On 21 September 1910 in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan, Elery was married to Clara Loretta Billinghurst, daughter of Charles Hatch Billinghurst and Cora Etta Wolcott. Clara was born 6 October 1889 in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan and died 15 March 1984 in Albion. Clara filed for divorce 12 January 1916 on the grounds of cruelty and abandonment and she was granted the divorce in February 1916 in Calhoun County, Michigan. There were three children born to this union; Gladys I. (1911-1916), Flossie Loretta (1913-1916), and Clifford Elton (1915-2011).

In 1918 Elery remarried to Anna W. M. Lettow, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Lettow. . Anna was born 31 May 1896 in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan and died 19 September 1966 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. To this union was born Louise Helen (1919-1984), Robert Franklin (1921-1976), and Francis L (1923-2007).

In June 1917 Elery was employed as a clerk at Murker's Restaurant (the spelling may not be correct) when he registered for the draft for World War I. At that time in life he was a tall man of medium build, black hair and blue eyes. He was living at 207 Superior Ave in Albion.

In 1920 the family was living at 114 Hearon in Albion and he was working in the welding industry in the electric occupation. In 1930 the family was living in Eckford, Calhoun, MI and he was employed as farmer. Sometime between 1935 and 1940 the family moved back to Albion, where he was self employed in the farming industry, then by 1950 had moved to Spring Arbor, Jackson, Michigan where he continued working in the farming industry.

On 20 May 1955 Elery died in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Albion.
