Hi

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors (if added) within about 24 hours.. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To be able to add profiles, you will need to upgrade (there is no cost). You can do this from your Upgrade page. Just answer the five questions, e.g. who you want to communicate with, if others can see your family tree, what surnames, locations, or topics interest you, etc, and click on the green box that says "Upgradeā€.

Upgrading just means you will become a Family Member with the ability to work on your immediate ancestors to help us achieve our goal of joining all individual family trees into one global family tree.

I hope this helps! If you have any problems, let me know.

Take care

Mindy ~ WikiTree Volunteer Greeter

PS There is a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that others found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Thanks Karen - there's so much here that I can use a little advice. I uploaded my GEDCOM file but cannot work out why it did not create a tree for me. When I look at my profile it shows only a few people I'd manually typed in before uploading. I'd like to keep the GEDCOM somewhat private - totally fine for others on this site, but especially for those still alive, I'd like to block it from search engines. Thoughts on how to do this?

Hi Kerry,

GEDCOMs do not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches. Once you have done this it will allow you to add profiles

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

I understand your privacy concerns, you can set your privacy level to show only the information you are happy for other people to see, the highest setting for an active WikiTree-er is the red setting, it shows the decade you were born. Due to new privacy laws that came out in May 2018.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GDPR_FAQ

Any profiles you create for people who are still living and are not active on WT will have their privacy level automatically set to "unlisted" status, so the only people who will be able to see their information will be you and anyone you add to a trusted list for that profile. Each profile has their own trusted list. If anyone did a search for someone with the same name as one of your unlisted people, it would take them to a page with all profiles created for the same or similar names, and your person will show up as "Living O'Donnell" , so your living family will be protected.

I hope this helps, any problems, please let me know

Take care

Karen
