He graduated from Trinity College Dublin as a barrister and practiced across the province of Munster. He became famous as a prolific writer of the Irish lifestyle.

He died on 25 March 1900 in Grange House, Fermoy, aged eighty five years old. His cause of death was senile decay. His son, RW O'Flanagan, was present[1].
