Research Notes

Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland[1] confirms that Edward Deane of Terenure had two daughters married to men named Standish (O')Grady:

These two couples have previously been conflated on WikiTree and elsewhere, and the lack of precise dates of birth, marriage and death for the latter couple still leaves room for doubt.

The balance of evidence, including the History of Parliament, shows that Frances was the mother of Henry Deane (O')Grady, although there has also been some confusion as to which couple were his parents.[2]

"Ballyvolane" and "Killballyowen" appear to be the townlands rendered respectively as Ballyvulhane and Kilballyowen by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland. These two townlands are separated only by the townland of Kyle.

Mark Humphrys describes Frances Deane's husband as "Standish Grady, of Lodge, Co.Limerick (would be Lodge, Hospital par, not far from Elton)", as does the History of Parliament. Lodge is about 8km north-east of Ballyvulhane. Henry Deane Grady's brother, yet another Standish, certainly lived at Lodge (according to their mother's death notice).

Madden[3] refers to both wives as Elizabeth; he also includes different Elizabeths among the children of both couples: the Kilballyowen couple's daughter married to James Bennett and the other couple's daughter married to William Wilson.

The Kilballyowen couple had two children,[4] Mrs. Eliza Bennett (m. early 1770s) and John, while the latter couple[3] had seven children, including Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson (m.1770), but not including a John.

Both Standishes must be descendants of Darby O'Grady and his wife Faith Standish, said to have married in 1633. Elizabeth's husband has a well-established line of descent from this couple through their older son Thomas; Frances's husband may descend from their second son Standish, whose descendants are merely summarised in Burke's Irish Family Records 1976 (p. 913) as follows:

Standish, ancestor of O'GRADY of Elton and Cappercullen, from a younger branch of which descended Deane Grady and Grove Grady.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Standish by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Standish:
