Born John Michael O'Keefe in Macroom, Co. Cork in 1875.
Shán Ó Cuív was a leading figure in the Irish language movement of the early 20th century. He was both a writer and journalist and very involved in the Gaelic League. He took a great interest in the teaching, pronunciation and spelling of Irish and lead the 'Leitriú Shimplí' movement.
