Ryan O'Neal was an American actor who first gained fame in the role of Rodney Harrington on the ABC nighttime soap opera, Peyton Place. He later found success in films, including the romantic drama Love Story (1970), for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama; Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc? (1972) and Paper Moon (1973), which earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy; Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975); Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far (1977); and Walter Hill's The Driver (1978). From 2005 to 2017, he had a recurring role in the Fox television series Bones as Max, the father of the show's protagonist.[1]

Charles Patrick Ryan O'Neal was born on 20 April 1941, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States. At the time of his birth, his father, Blackie O'Neal, a screen writer, was 37 and his mother, Patricia O'Callaghan, was 33. [2] Ryan's heritage includes Irish, English, and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.

At the time of the 1950 U.S. Census, Ryan was living with his parents and brother in Los Angeles, California. [3]

He married Dorothy Joanne Cook, whose stage name was Joanna Moore, on 3 April 1963, in Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada, United States.

Ryan O'Neal, who stars regularly as Tal Garret on "Empire," and actress Joanna Moore have disclosed that they were secretly married in Las Vegas, Nev., on April 3.
The romance began seven months ago when Miss Moore guest-starred in the series during location filming at Santa Fe, N.M.
Miss Moore made her professional debut on "Lux Video Theatre" in 1957 and went on to a successful career in TV and motion pictures. She is under contract to Revue Studios.
The O'Neals are making their home in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Ryan and Joanna were the parents of two children. They divorced December 1966 in Los Angeles, California.[5]

Ryan's second marriage was to actress Leigh Taylor-Young 1 March 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii.[6] They were the parents of a son. They remained friends after divorcing in 1973.

He had a 17-year-long relationship with the actress Farrah Fawcett. They were the parents of one son. [7]

He died on 8 December 2023, in Los Angeles, California, United States, at the age of 82.[8]
