Thomas was the third of nine children born to James and Mary Ann Nolan O'Neill. He grew up on the family farm in Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario.[1] He married Tessy Hayes when he was 26 years old.[2]On the census just prior to his marriage, he had his own farm, and his sister Florence was living with him, perhaps keeping house and helping with the farm.[3]
Ten years later, John was living in the town of Guelph and employed as an undertaker.[4] By 1911, John was working as a cream separator in Guelph.[5]
John died some time in the next few years, before reaching age 51. HIs wife is listed as a widow on her son's enlistment papers for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in 1916.
