There seems to have been a single Edward O'Neill (or, variations thereof, including Neal, and Neill) in Harbour Grace around the years 1835-1867 --- when his son Edward was born. Birth and marriage records indicate the family was Catholic. Thus, he was likely to be the Edward Neil, laborer, mentioned in the 1871 Lovell's Directory[1].
He was married to an Elizabeth (last name not known). In an account on the Harbour Grace Affray (1883; see the Harbour Grace page for a fuller account), they were mentioned as Edward, Elizabeth and James Neil of Harbour Grace. Presumably James was their eldest son---then 20 years old.[2]
