James Reilly was born in Takaka in 1867, the second son of James and Sarah Reilly.
He married a daughter of Patrick Byrne
James Reilly was a farmer Takaka, He built and conducted the Junction Hotel.
James Reilly founded the Takaka Racing Club. He was active in the local sports clubs; president of the Golden Bay Rugby Union and Takaka Football Club, a member of the Athletic Club committee, and was secretary and treasurer of the Takaka Regatta Club.
He was on the committee of the local Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a director of the Bacon Company, a member of the local school and library committees
James was born about 1867. He was the son of James O'Reilly and Sarah Kearns. He passed away about 1945.
