Biography

William Joseph O'Rourke. [1][2][3]

Born 25 Nov 1869. Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. [4]

Residence 1920 Bison, Perkins County, South Dakota, USA. [5] 28 Jul 1870. Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. [6] 1880 Washington Township, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. [7]

Note: William was the seventh child of Daniel Charles O'Rourke and Mary Corkery O'Rourke. After the death of his father in 1876, his mother's constant illness forced her to place her four youngest children, of which William (age 7) was one, with her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Edward Kelly of Green County, Wisconsin. He eventually worked his way West and in 1912 took out a homestead claim in Rainbow Township in Perkins County, South Dakota. In his journey West he met a young lady by the name of Rosa Mary Staudenraus of Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She, being of an adventurous nature, was also interested in traveling further West. She also took out a claim, joining that of William's, in Perkins County. William and Rosa were married on April15, 1912. William, "Shorty" to his friends and neighbors, worked for a time in the livery stable in Lemmon, South Dakota. He also drove a six-horse team on a freight wagon delivering freight to surrounding towns to supplement his homestead income. William and Rosa had nine children, all of whom were born at their homestead farm. After the death of his wife, he was left with nine children to raise, ranging in ages from 16 to four months. The four month old baby, Loretta Rose, went to live with an aunt and uncle, Art and Sara Nehl at Watauga, South Dakota. An older son, Robert, who helped his mother with the household duties, took over the care of the home and younger children. Robert left home in 1935. William worked very hard to keep his family together, remembering how his family broke up after the death of his own father. William never remarried. After William's passing, the family continued to live on the farm. Two of his older children, Daniel and Isabel, took over the care of the farm and the two younger children. The original homestead, a third generation farm, is now operated by his daughter Patricia's son, Shane Kolb, and his family. (Pat Kolb 1994). According to "The Past and Present of Jasper County, Iowa" (1912), page 953, William was living in South Dakota. 2 According to a Standard Certificate of Death on file with the South Dakota Department of Health, William died from heart disease, from which he had suffered since the previous October. His son, William, was the informant for the certificate. 2 2
