Biography

According to S.T. McCarthy's "Three Kerry Families"[1] John of Dunloe "married firstly Honora, daughter of Maurice O’Connell of Cahirbarnagh, by whom he had two sons, Donogh or Denis the founder of that of Dunloe. He married secondly Gillen, daughter of [O'Sullivan of] Dunloe, then passed to him."

Goddard Henry Orpen says[2] that on "16 January 1706/7 the same John Mahony by his will devised one-third of the lands to his eldest son Donough (of Dromore) for life with remainder to his son John and the heirs male of his body ; one-third to his said son Daniel (of Dunloe) and the heirs male of his body ; and the remaining one-third to his then wife Julian for life and then to his sons (John, James, and Philip) by her and the heirs male of their bodies.".

There is a memorial to a deed of 1734[3] that confirms that John's will of 16th January 1706 split his estate between his sons Dennis and Daniel, and his wife Julian. This document also confirms that Julian had married Garrett Fitzgerald before 1713 and that John of Dromore had inherited her portion by 1734.

Her children were

  • John, who inherited from Julian and is alive in 1734.
  • James
  • Philip

There is also a daughter Julian who married Captain Owen Ferris and is mentioned in his will of 1724[4] that is also probably hers.

She is a defendant in an Exchequer Bill[5] dated 11th November 1715: Donogh Mahony Gent vs Daniel Mahony, Garrett Fitzgerald, Julian his wife.

A later Exchequer Bill[6] of 25th July 1726 or 1727 has John Mahony Jas Mahony & Philip Mahony vs Danl Mahony Alice Mahony Widow and others. Given the case involved her three sons against the other two beneficiaries of the 1706 will (Alice is Dennis' widow) this might be a dispute over their inheritance from Julian.

Also involved in both the above Exchequer Bills was Daniel/ Donal O'Sullivan More. It is likely that Julian was a daughter of an earlier O'Sullivan More.
