Patrick O'Sullivan was born on the 14th March 1818, at Castlemaine, County Kerry, Ireland, the son of William O'Sullivan, a soldier, and his wife Ellen Moriarty.
Patrick also joined the army, and was stationed in London with his regiment when Queen Victoria succeeded to the throne in 1837. In early January the following year, however, he was sentenced to fifteen years transportation for assault, thus missing the coronation itself by several months.Patrick was transported on the Bengal Merchant, arriving in the Colony of New South Wales on the 21st July 1838. He was sent to work in the Illawarra district, where he earned his ticket-of-leave by February 1845. Starting in the Windsor District, he began hawking, afterwards moving to Bathurst later in 1845.
A couple of years later (around May 1847) Patrick moved to the Ipswich area of what would soon become the separate Colony of Queensland. Once there he became a storekeeper, and was granted a conditional pardon in October 1849.
Patrick married Mary Real (a fellow Irish immigrant who had arrived in the Colony only the year before) on the 7th May 1851, in Ipswich.[1][2]
Over the next 29 years Patrick and Mary had thirteen children, five daughters, and seven sons :
Patrick entered politics in the brand new Colony of Queensland in 1860, winning the inaugural seat for Ipswich, and remaining in office from the 10th May 1860 until the 30th May 1863. He served with Frederick Forbes and Arthur Macalister. In 1863 he was succeeded by Henry Challinor. This was not the end of his political career, however, as he subsequently sat as Member of the Legislative Assembly (Queensland) for the areas of West Moreton, Burke, and Stanley (twice).
Patrick O'Sullivan, variously solder, convict, hawker, merchant, and politician, passed away of a stroke at his Woodend, Ipswich, Queensland home, on the 29th February 1904, just two weeks before his 86th birthday, survived by his wife, and eight of his thirteen children.[3]
Patrick was buried in the Ipswich General Cemetery, where his wife would also later be laid to rest.[4]
