Immigrated to the United States in 1870 from Ireland. 1900 census stated she could not read or write, but did speak English. [1]
In 1900, her and her husband owned their own house at 54 River Street, Ward 6 of Hornellsville, Steuben County, NY, which did have mortgage. [2]
1900 Census reported her as having 10 children, 7 of which were alive during the 1900 census. Children James Hendy (b. April 1883) and Clara Hendy (b. Feb 1881) still lived with her, both of whom could read and write. [3]
She did not work. [4]
Both her parents were born in Ireland. [5]
But, the 1900 Census shows he Samuel was married to Anne O'Brien 37 years earlier (1863), but that Anne immigrated 30 years in earlier, 1870, meaning they were married after Samuel arrived, but in Ireland. Things are further confused by the only immigration record of an age appropriate Irish Anne Obrien or Hendy was Anne O'brien arriving at the age four in 1846 on the Trenton with Arrived with Margt O’brien (age 23), Mary Anne (7), and James (2). . In short, I am not sure census record is accurate of the immigration dates. But I assume it is for the marriage, as no woman ever gets that wrong. [6]
The Hornell Tribune wrote "Death wrought great havoc on the eastside yesterday when it took from our midst two of our most respectable ladies, Mrs. Samuel Hendy and Mrs. John Layton." [7]
