Henry passed away in 1930[1]
Mr. Henry Oakes, who died at 'Oakhurst,' Fullarton Road, Fullarton Estate, on Thursday, was a native of Cheshire, England, and received his education at Santry College, Dublin. He was in his 84th year. He came to Australia in 1865 to take up a position as master in Bishop Hale's school (now known as Hale's College) in Perth. Among his pupils were the late Lord Forrest and the late Mr Alexander Forrest, and Sir Edward Wittenoom. He eventually gave up teaching and entered into the banking business, joining the Perth staff of the National Bank. In 1873 he was transferred to the Adelaide office, and five years later linked up with the Commercial Bank. For both institutions he was a branch manager, and opened 39 branches in various parts of the State. He was stationed in the South-East for nearly 13 years, and was well-known at Narracoorte, Penola, and Mount Gambieer. In 1889 he retired and for a time resided at Norwood, and finally moved to Fullarton 33 years ago. In 1873 Mr. Oakes married Miss Elizabeth M. Samson, at St. John's Church of England, Fremantle. He was first lay reader at St. Paul's Church, Narracoorte, and a Justice of the Peace. His widow survives, and there are five sons and two daughters — Messrs. Lionel R. Oakes (Fullarton), Ernest W Oakes (Broken Hill), Horace W Oakes (Norwood), Langlois Oakes (Fullarton), Reginald N. Oakes (Myrtle Bank), and Misses Muriel and Hilda Oakes (Fullarton). There are four grandchildren.
