Thomas Clement Oakes was one of at least 10 children of James Washington and Eveline Oaks. Birthplace is in question, as census records say Virginia, but Findagrave says Guilford, North Carolina, just over the border.
John is shown in his parents home in 1850 in Pittsylvania. He married Altoney M. Harris(possibly Athena or Althena, as a grandchild would later carry that name) on December 17, 1855 in Guilford, NC. The couple had two children:
Unfortunately, wife Altoney(Athena?) died in 1859, and Thomas was noted in his parents home in the 1860 census, along with son James.
When the Civil War began, brothers Thomas, John, and James Oakes would enlist, all being in the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company B. Thomas was a Sergeant, his brothers Privates. One of Thomas' neighbors, John W. Mahan was in the same unit. Thomas was nice enough to assist John in writing letters home on occasion.
Per Findagrave, Thomas C. Oakes was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1 - 3 , 1863, and died of wounds in a Union hospital a month thereafter.
Son James would marry Susan Haley in 1876 in Pittsylvania, and the couple would have 11 children. Censuses of 1880, 1910 would show son James as born in North Carolina.
