FATAL RIDING ACCIDENT.

PORTARLINGTON, TUESDAY.

A fatal accident occurred here yesterday to Mr Montague Oakes. When returning from the post office to his home the pony he was riding bolted with him and collided with a cow in the street. Mr Oakes was thrown and sustained concussion of the brain. He never regained consciousness, and died this afternoon. ^[4]

Death of Mr. Montague Oakes. —

On November 12th, Mr. Montague Oakes, brother to Mr. Douglas Oakes, of Frederickton, was accidentally killed at Portarlington, Victoria. Mr. Oakes was returning to his home when the pony he was riding bolted with him and collided with a cow in the street. The unfortunate gentleman was thrown to the ground with great force and sustained concussion of the brain. He never recovered consciousness and died the same day. ^[5]

Following a service on 14th November 1895, his remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Portarlington Cemetery where, on 17th May 1927, Maria joined him. ^[6]
