John Oakes was born in 1856 ^[1] in Warrington, Lancashire, England, the illegitimate son of Mary Oakes.

In 1861 John (age 5) was living with his mother at the home of his grandparents in Warrington. He was recorded as their son rather than their grandson. ^[2]

His mother married in 1874 and in 1881, John was living with his mother, stepfather and 2 stepsiblings in Naylor Street, Warrington, Lancashire. He was a labourer. ^[3]

In 1884, John married Elizabeth Brown from Glasgow, Scotland. They married in Warrington. ^[4]

In 1901 John (age 45) was living with his wife and 3 children in West Ham, Essex. He was a gas stove fitter and tester. Living with them (as boarders) were 5 men from Warrington; all of them were gas stove fitters, repairers or testers. ^[5]

In 1911 John (age 55) was living in Grove Street, Warrington with his wife and son. He was a provision dealer. ^[6]
