"OAKES - William Peter [I have Picken] and Sarah Montgomery (Smith) Oakes came to Bellefonte, AR, from Tennessee before 1891. One of their daughters, Alice Belle, who was born at Sparta, White County, TN, married Edward Guinn Whitaker on Feb. 22, 1891, in Boone County AR. Smith Cleveland (married Alice Stroman); Frank: Eva Maude, born in Harrison (married Claude Quantrel Stroman).
William was the son of Rama and Mahalia (Smith) Oakes and the grandson of John and Elizabeth Oakes, all residents of Fentress County, TN. in 1850. The grandparents were born in Virginia. Rama was a Methodist preacher, known as a circuit rider.
Balam [I have spelling as Balaam] Oakes, another son of Rama, was also a minister. He married Mary Evaline Smith, a sister of Sarah Montgomery Smith.
Sara was born Aug. 4, 1850, a daughter of Abner Carroll and Martha Ann (Burden) Smith and the granddaughter of William Benjamin and Lydia (Hodges) Smith. Martha Ann Burden was the daughter of Squire and Charlotte (Sumett) Burden who were residents of White County, TN, in 1840. The parents of Squire Burden were William and Eleandor "Ellen" (Hutson) Burden, who married Jan. 27, 1794, in Knox County, TN. and moved to Washington County, AR, in the mid-1830s.
When the Oakes family left Arkansas, they moved to Gonzales, TX.

Deceased had been sick for some weeks. Decesed (sic) was born in Cumberland county, Tenn., Feb. 3, 1848, and early in life he became a member of the Methodist church. Among his ansestors were a number of Methodist ministers. He was married sixty years age, and his wife and three sons and one daughter survive him. Deceased came to Texas thirty years ago and for the past two years has been living with his son, near Woodward. The funeral was held Sunday evening, Rev. J.C. Young conducting the service.
