John Andrew Oakes was born on January 27, 1829 in Greene, Pennsylvania, United States, son of Isaac Oakes (1805–1889) and Mary Sams (1812–1875).[1]

John (26) married Charlottie Battin (34) (born on February 8, 1821 in Highland, Ohio, United States; daughter of Henry Battin and Margery (Craven) Batten) on September 6, 1855 in Highland, Ohio. Their daughter was Lydia Ellen Oakes (1857–1921).

John died on January 8, 1900 in Marion, Iowa, United States, aged 70. He was buried in Pleasantville Cemetery, Pleasantville, Marion County, Iowa.[1]
