Gilbert Oakley was born in 1745, in Westchester county, New York, a son of Elisha Oakley and Elizabeth (Yeomans) Oakley. Gilbert was named in the Will of his paternal grandfather, Robert Yeomans, dated 18 March 1761 Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County, New York. Gilbert was remembered with a gift of two sheep, as well as his share of the inheritance. [1] Gilbert married Sarah Haviland. [2]
Gilbert was Witness to Will of Phebe Hunt of Westchester County, new York, probated 9 December 1772. This Will left "oe 20", a set pf blue curtains, and a blue bed quilt to Mary, wife of Gilbert Oakley. Gilbert made his own Will on October 23, 1822. His seven children, and several grandchildren, are named therein.
Gilbert Oakley died December 5, 1827, in Taghkanic, about nine miles southwest of Craryville, and is buried in the North Coapke Cemetery, Craryville Columbia county, New York. [3] Sarah died July 15, 1830, nearly 80 years of age, and is buried next to him. There are photographs of their headstones on their Find A Grave memorials.
