CLARKE , Elsie . 30 June 1910 . Aged 29 years.

OBITUARY. MRS. G. E. CLARKE. Quite a gloom was cast over the community yesterday when the news spread rapidly round—as ill news will—that Mrs. G .E. Clarke., the wife of Councillor Clarke, had that afternoon passed away. As it was not generally known that the lady was at all indisposed, the information came as a great shock to the people of Bunbury, among whom Mrs. Clarke had lived since the days of her early childhood—loved, liked, and esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances for many acts of kindness and charity. The cause of kindness and charity. [sic] The cause of the death was heart failure following on one of the perilous periods which beset motherhood. Dr. Joel was in attendance, but his skill and unremitting attention proved unavailing to resuce his patient from the brink on which he found her on Wednesday. In the deep distress caused by the sad and unexpected event, sympahty came uppermost for the bereaved husband, a full and sincere measure of which goes out to this estimable citizen in the dark hour of his most terrible visitation. Left with two little children, bonny little boy and girl, of too tender years almost to realise their irreparable loss, his position is one that stirs the sympathy of everyone one to the uttermost. Both the husband, and the wife whose end it is our painful duty to record, were among the best known people of the district. The deceased lady was the second daughter of Mrs. Oakley, who afterwards became Mrs. William Spencer, and spent her girlhood at the Spencer family house, Bury Hill, Bunbury. She was married to Mr. G. E. Clarke nearly five years ago, and a happy married state continued uninterrupted till the last bitter sundering which it is now our painful mission to record. To the bereaved husband and to the motherless little ones, to the mother and family of the deceased lady, and to Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Clarke and family, the heartfelt condolences of the whole of the people of the district wells up on the sad affliction that has fallen upon them. . . .

Death of Spouse: 1958, District of Wellington, Western Australia, Australia
