Biography

James was born on 12 January 1809 in Sampson, North Carolina, USA. He was the son of Stephen Oates and Elizabeth (Shipp) Oates.[1]

In the 1840 census James (age 31) was living in Sampson, North Carolina, United States.[2]

In the 1850 census James (age 41) was living in Southern District, Henry, Alabama.[1]

In the 1860 census James (age 51) was living in Beat 10, Shelby, Texas, United States.[3]
