Biography

Lilian Mary Elizabeth Oates was the oldest child of William Edward Oates and [[Buckton-327|Caroline Annie (Buckton) Oates. Lilian's grandmother Mary (Oates) Buckton was her father's cousin. She was born in Düsseldorf, Rheinland, Preußen, Germany 26 Jun 1878.^[1]

In 1881 Lilian he parent's and brother Lawrence were living at Weetwood Hall in Leeds. ^[2]

In 1891 Lilian and her sister and brothers are living at 263 Upper Richmond Rd, Putney ^[3] in the care of Mary Oates from Australia, daughter of Caroline's uncle George William Wood while her parents are on holiday on Isle of Wight ^[4]

On 3 April 1896 (Good Friday) Lilian's father William died on typhoid in Madiera ^[5]

At the 1901 Census on 31 March Lilian and her sister Violet are living with their mother at 14 Evelyn Mansions, Carlisle Place, Westminster ^[6]

On 21 January 1909 Lilian married Frederick Baring Ranalow, an Irish baritone and actor, at St Bartholomew the Great, City of London ^[7] There were 2 children from the marriage

At the 1911 census Lilian and Frederick are living at 7 Brunswick Terrace, Campden Hill, Kensington ^[8]

By 1914 Lilian and Frederick are living at 12 Argyll Rd, Kensington ^{[9] [10]} Lilian's mother Buckton-327 died on 26 November 1937 at the family's Essex estate at Gestingthorpe ^[11] In 1936 Lilian and Frederick moved to 215 Cromwell Rd, Kensington where Lilian remained living until 1955. ^[12]

Son Patrick, who flew bombers, died in Germany in April 1945. ^[13] Husband Frederick died in London on 8 December 1953. ^[14]

In 1956 Lilian along with daughter Erica (Ranalow) Blenkinsop and her family moved to 46 Melrose Rd, Wandsworth, where she resided till her death. ^[15] Lilian died on 7 November 1965 at Wolfeton Hotel, Victoria Ave, Swanage, Devon. ^[16] Probate over the estate of £80,156 was granted to her daughter Erica and Alan Edward Oliver solicitor on 31 January 1966.
