They were subsequently married on 10 August 1861 at St John's Church in the Parish of Pendeen, Cornwall, England.[3]. William was a Farmer. The Witnesses were Charles Oatey and Thomas Ellis.

They went on to have at least four children, one of whom died young.

In the UK Census of 1871 William Oats (aged 42) was living with his wife Grace (33) and two children Charles (7) and Grace (5) at Trewellard, St Just, Cornwall, England. Aged 42.

Occupation: Miner

In 1873 his widowed sister Mary Ellis emigrated from England to New Zealand with her children.
