Karl Oskar Åberg was born on September 17, 1872 in Horn parish, Skaraborg, Sweden. He was the son of Johannes Åberg and his wife Maja Stina Johansdotter.
He had seven full siblings and a maternal half sister.
Karl Oskar emigrated to the US in 1892, and anglicized his name to Carl Oscar Oberg. His brothers Ivar Theodor b. 1874 and Erik Nicolaus b. 1876 followed him to the US in in 1893. Their oldest brother, Johan August b. 1861 had left already in 1882.
