John was born in 1893 at 10pm, 2 hours after his twin sister Susan at Newtown Road, Waterford. Mary Grant from Manor Street (about 15 minutes walk) present at their birth. [1] He was the son of John Obrien (labourer) and Bridget Keane.

He was living with his parents and siblings at house 27 in Roche's Street (Waterford Urban No. 4, Waterford) in 1901[2]

He was living with the Cunningham family at 3 in Barrack Street (Cappoquin, Waterford) working as a general labourer in 1911[3]
