Biography
John Sleading was born in Grindleton, Lancashire, England.
John Sleading, son of single mother Alice, was baptised on 26 March 1797 in Grindleton, Yorkshire, England.[1] His mother married Thomas Oddie in 1798 and they went on to have 2 more sons and a daughter.
Marriage and Children
- John is known to have married Ann surname unknown, date unknown. They are believed to have had at least six (6) children three daughters and three sons:
- Mary (Sleading) Oddie (bef. 1821)
- Alice Sleading Oddie (abt. 1827 - 1861)
- Elizabeth Oddie (1827)
- Thomas Oddie (abt. 1832)
- John Oddie (abt. 1835)
- James Sleading Oddie (1839 - 1845)
Death and Burial
- John died on the or before the 12th of October 1847, he was buried in St Ambrose Churchyard, Grindleton, Ribble Valley Borough, Lancashire, England[2]
Family History
- This branch of the Oddies in Grindleton were known locally as the "Church Window Oddies", having a commemorative window in the church. As frequently happened, the eldest child was born before the parents were 'Churched' and dependant on the presiding minister, the child my get his or her Fathers Surname, or if he were more of a 'Jobsworth' he would insist on the mother's surname. In this case, it can be seen on the gravestone that the surname Oddie has been added later - data provided by Jim Leach when profile edited on 23 February 2014.
