May have been born in either 1799 or 1807. According to the Haacker Manuscript in the New York Public Library: Elijah's birth is shown as 1807 with 1799 originally entered and then crossed out.

Native of Westchester County, NY. Learned Blacksmith trade and did so in New York City until 1837. Married wife Eliza Ann Davis in 1828. Moved to Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Daughter, Elizabeth married John Martin and after having two children migrated to the Western frontier. The Odells moved to Iowa Falls in 1857. His wife died in 1875. His daughter Phoebe married David S. Martin who was born in Ireland in 1834 and came to the US in 1856 (initially in PA) and married in February, 1882.

Elijah Odell appears in the 1880 US Census in Hardin, Iowa. He is listed as widowed and occupation of farmer. Elijah lived with his two daughters Phoebe and Laura as well as David S. Martin from Ireland who was known to later marry his daughter Phoebe.
