Biography

Jonas was born in the town of Cambridge, formerly Albany County, now Washington County, New York.

An Odle family Bible record was contributed by Judge Louis C. Cramton of Lapeer, MI, along with an affidavit stating that “he knew the late Theodore Bryon Odle who is shown by the records of the Lapeer County Clerk to have died December 29, 1907, aged 83 years, 1 month and 16 days; that he knows Russel B. Odle, son of said Theodore Bryron Odle, and has examined a Bible in possession of said Russel B. Odle, and that the following is an exact transcription of the portions indicated.” At the bottom of the last page of the Old Testament is the following, “Jonas Odel was married to Lucy Odel his wife September ye 15th Day in the year 1783.”

One of the record pages between the Testaments has been torn out and on the front side of the remaining page are the following birth records.

“Ruth Odel born 28th day of September. 1784” “Phebe Odel was born June 11 1789” “P. Odel born April”[1]

in 1790, Jonas is found in Stephen Town, Albany County, New York.[2] The 1800 census shows him in Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York.[3]

Jonas Odell was an early settler (before 1803, in the west or hill settlement of Washington county, at Blair’s Bay in Putnam.[4] Washington County was created from Albany County. The town of Cambridge was transferred from Albany to Washington County in 1791 on the same day that Rensselaer and Saratoga counties were set off from Albany County.[5] Jonas lived in this area when the location name was changing often. The history of Rensselaer County mentions Jonas several times. Jonas was a supervisor of Stephentown from 1791-1794. A Jonas Odell owned the first tavern in the village of Berlin.[6]
