Biography

Richard Odom was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

Richard Odom was born about 1792 probably in Beaufort County, South Carolina to parents Isaac Odom and Millie Breland. His father died about 1800 which left his mother Millie and his two brothers, William and Shadrack. Richard traveled from South Carolina to Mississippi in 1811 along with his brothers, William and Shadrack, his mother and other family members, about 60 in all.

Richard's age can be accurately estimated because he first paid a poll tax (no land) in 1813 in Marion County, Mississippi. A young man had to pay a poll tax upon reaching twenty-one years of age. Richard is then listed in the 1820 census of Pike County, Mississippi: 1 white male 18-26 years and 1 white female 26-44 years indicating that he has married fairly recently since there are no children accounted for in the census. His surname is mis-indexed as Quam but has been corrected. [1]

Richard's first wife is strongly believed to have been a Merchant, daughter of John Merchant and wife Nancy Elizabeth "Betty" Mills. The Merchants did live in Pike County during the years that a daughter and Richard Odom would have married. On the 1820 census John Merchant and Richard Odom are listed in adjacent dwellings. John Merchant had several daughters but their first names are not all known. Richard and his first wife had seven children between 1821 and 1832.

Richard Odom received a Land Patent in Pike County, Mississippi 1 September 1834. The parcel contained 81 and 60 hundreths acres. Andrew Jackson was the President of the United States who signed the Patent.

About 1840 Unknown Merchant Odom died, but not before the 1840 census was taken.[2]

By 1845, Richard married Elizabeth Purvis, widow of Joseph Purvis who had died in 1841. They had no children together but Elizabeth had several children from her first marriage. They appear in the 1850 census together. [3]

Richard died 23 April 1854 in Simpson County, Mississippi.
