Sarah Frances Odom was born 10 August 1826 to parents Richard Odom and Unknown Merchant in Mississippi. It is strongly believed that her mother was a Merchant daughter of John Merchant and Betty Mills.
Sarah Odom and husband James H. Henderson had eight children. There is no marriage record but they did marry about 1844- 1846 probably in Simpson County, Mississippi. They appear in the 1850 census in Simpson County.[1]
Sarah and James are missing on the 1860 census but in 1870, after the Civil War, they are living in Lawrence County, Mississippi. [2]
By 1880 James and Sarah have moved to Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. Their name is misspelled as Henneson. [3]
Once again James and Sarah moved but not so far this time. They relocated a bit to the north to Rapides Parish, Louisiana. In 1900 they were the only ones living in the household. [4]
Sarah Odom Henderson died at her home in Forest Hill, Louisiana on 20 September 1911. She is buried in the Butters Cemetery in Forest Hill. [5]
Sarah's tombstone gives her birth date as 1816. This is clearly wrong and research proves it. Her parents did not marry until about 1820 and their first child was born in 1821. Sarah was the fifth child born in 1826 so there is no way she would have been born in 1816. FindAGrave will not change her birth date even though sources have been provided to them. Please do not change her birth date on this profile to match FindAGrave or her tombstone. Read the sources here and look at her siblings birth dates. Some are estimates but one thing is certain. Her father was on the 1820 census with one female in the age bracket to be his wife and there were no children in their household. The 1830 census shows children and have been matched up with the order in which they are known to have been born.
