Howard was born in 1924. He was the son of Howard Odum. He passed away in 2002.
Howard Thomas Odum was an American ecologist. He is known for his pioneering work on ecosystem ecology, and for his provocative proposals for additional laws of thermodynamics, informed by his work on general systems theory. He and his brother Eugene wrote the popular ecology textbook Fundamentals of Ecology, published in 1953. Odum School of Ecology is named in their honor.
In 1947, Howard married Virginia Wood; they had two children. After her death in 1973, he married Elizabeth C. Odum in 1974, who had four children from her previous marriage.
