June 10, 1841: John Oesting married Elizabeth Bettenbrock in Hamilton County, Ohio.[1]
May 3, 1842: John and Elizabeth may have had at least one child together - there was a boy, Heinrich Wilhelm Oesting, who was born May 3, 1842, and died September 3 of that same year.[2] The picture of his headstone shows that it is a shared headstone with two other people. At the top of the headstone is A. M Elisabeth Oesting b. Oct. 1817, Sep. 27, 1843,[3] and at the bottom is Maria E. Bettenbrock b. 1786 Germany, d. Sep. 10 1864.[4] All are buried in Walnut Hills Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, Plot: Section: 7 Lot: 74.

Sometime around 1843: Sophia/Louisa Oesting was born in Ohio. (Identified as Sophia on 1850 census, Louisa on 1860 census; birth year is 1843 and other children's names match up.)
February 8, 1844: John D. Oesting married Juliane Amalie Schmersal "Schmersals" in Hamilton County, Ohio.[5]

1850 US Census: John "Ostong" (bad transcription, original says "Osting"), age 37, was living with his family in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. His occupation was "Grocer" and his real estate worth was listed at $4000. The residents of the house were himself and wife Julia "Ostong" age 30, both born in Germany; daughter Sophia, 7, son Johnny, 5, son Henry, 2, all born in Ohio; and two other residents, Fredrick Homan age 30 and May Bennings age 23, both born in Germany.[6]
1860 US Census: John "Osting", age 47, was living with his family in Washington Township, Jackson, Indiana. The residents of the house were himself and wife "Julia Ann" (Juliana) "Osting" age 45, both born in Hanover; daughter Louisa "Osting" age 17, born in Ohio; son John, 15, born in Ohio; and younger son Henry "Osting", age 12, born in Ohio.[7]
1870 US Census: John D Oesting, age 57, born in "Oldenberg", was living in Indiana with his family. The residents of the house were himself and his wife Juliana, age 53, born in Russia (may have been Prussia), his son Henry Oesting, age 21, born in Ohio; one William Horstack, age 16, born in Kentucky; and mother-in-law Margaret "Smearsaltz", age 96 born in Russia (may have been Prussia).[8]
Apr. 26, 1876: Juliana died, leaving John D. a widower. She was buried in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Dudleytown, Jackson County, Indiana. Her gravestone said she was born Schmersal, in Hanover.[9]
1880 US Census: John D. Oesting age 67, was living with his son John Oesting age 35, married, living in Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana. John the younger's occupation was "Clerk In Store". With them lived John the younger's wife Hannah Oesting, age 25; and their daughters Amelia (Emilie) Oesting age 5, and Ida Oesting age 3.[10]
Dec. 24, 1884: John D. Oesting died the day before Christmas in 1884 and was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana. His gravestone reads the following:[11]
