Biography

Henry/Heinrich Oesting was the son of John D. and Juliane Schmersal Oesting. He was listed as "Henry" on all census records but "Heinrich" on his gravestone. He lived to be 27.

On February 8, 1844, John D. Oesting married Juliane Amalie Schmersal "Schmersals" in Hamilton County, Ohio.^[1]

Sometime in 1850: United States Census found John "Ostong" (bad transcription, original says "Osting"), age 37, living with his family in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. His occupation was "Grocer" and his real estate worth was listed at $4000. The residents of the house were himself and wife Julia "Ostong" age 30, both born in Germany; daughter Sophia, 7, son Johnny, 5, son Henry, 2, all born in Ohio; and two other residents, Fredrick Homan age 30 and May Bennings age 23, both born in Germany.^[2]

Sometime in 1860: United States Census found John "Osting", age 47, living with his family in Washington Township, Jackson, Indiana. The residents of the house were himself and wife "Julia Ann" (Juliana) "Osting" age 45, both born in Hanover; daughter Louisa "Osting" age 17, born in Ohio; son John, 15, born in Ohio; and younger son Henry "Osting", age 12, born in Ohio.^[3]

Sometime in 1870: The United States Census found John D Oesting, age 57, born in "Oldenberg", living in Indiana with his family. The residents of the house were himself and his wife Juliana, age 53, born in Russia (may have been Prussia), his son Henry Oesting, age 21, born in Ohio; one William Horstack, age 16, born in Kentucky; and mother-in-law Margaret "Smearsaltz", age 96 born in Russia (may have been Prussia).^[4]

Henrich Oesting, born Jul. 18, 1848 in Ohio, died Apr. 23, 1876 in Jackson County, Indiana, was buried in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Dudleytown, Jackson County, Indiana.^[5]
