Biography

In the 1870 census, William 'Osting' was living in Kansas, United States, a 28 year old white male working as a farmer, no other residents in household, mother and father of foreign birth.[1]

Married Lois E. Miles on 04 Apr 1880 in Neosho, Kansas, United States. He was 38, she was 19.[2]

In the 1880 Census, William lived in the household of Justin W Miles, his father-in-law, in Tioga, Neosho, Kansas, United States. Justin was 59 years old, a farmer. With him were his wife Mary Miles, daughter Lois Oesting, son-in-law William Oesting, and son Henry Miles.[3]

In 1881, William and Lois had a son Frederick J. Oesting. Also in 1881, Lois died and was buried. Her death was on Sep. 2, 1881, and her gravestone read: "Wife of William Oesting, Aged 21 years, 2 months". She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Chanute.[4] It is not known who raised Frederick Oesting; his only records are his death record in Michigan at age 19 and a newspaper mention in his father's death. Frederick died 09 Feb 1900 in Bear Lake Twp., Manistee, Michigan, where he had been working as a laborer.[5]

William married Emma J. Cook on 11 Apr 1904 in Erie, Neosho, Kansas, United States. He was listed as 60, she was 53.[6]

Their marriage was announced in the Chanute Daily Tribune, Chanute, Kansas, on 11 Apr 1904:

William Oesting's obituary in the Chanute Daily Tribune, Chanute, Kansas, on 12 January 1914:

WM. OESTING, PIONEER, DEAD
---
HE HAD LIVED IN THIS VICINITY FOR FORTY YEARS.
---
HE SAW SERVICE IN THE PRUSSIAN ARMY.
---
ENGAGED IN MILLING HERE IN AN EARLY DAY.
---
Death Came in Phoenix, Ariz., Where He Went Recently to Seek Relief From Asthma by a Change of Climate - Funeral Not Arranged For Yet.
---
William Oesting, a resident of Chanute for forty years, died in Phoenix, Ariz., last night. A message telling of the death was received this morning by John Kuehner.
Mr. Oesting had been a sufferer for years from Asthma. Last Wednesday, desite the warnings of his physician, he left for Arizona to seek relief in a change of climate. He was 78 or 80 years old and the sudden change, although a vigorous man for his age, proved too great a strain.
The deceased was a Prussian by birth and served his time in the army of his native country. He came to Chanute a short time after reaching the United States. For a time he was enaged in the milling business here and later took up contracting work.
What disposition will be made of the body is not known at present. It may be brought here for burial. So far as is known Mr. Oesting has no blood relatives living in the United States.

On January 14, 1914, one Henry Frederick Oesting was mentioned in a news article in the Chanute Daily Tribune, Chanute, Kansas.[8]

WM. OESTING'S SON AND BROTHER
---
HIS BROTHER ACCOMPANIED HIM FROM PRUSSIA.
---
He Left Here in 1873 and Is Now a Prosperous Real Estate Agent in San Diego, Cali. - Mr. Oesting's Son Lives In Wisconsin.
---
In reporting the death of William Oesting, who passed away a week ago yesterday in Phoenix, Ariz., where he had gone but a short time previous to seek relief from asthma, it was stated that Mr. Oesting had no blood relatives in the United States.
This was a mistake, according to one of his acquaintances who is a reader of The Tribune. When Mr. Oesting came to the United States he was accompanied by a brother, Henry Frederick Oesting who is a prosperous real estate agent in San Diego, Cali.
The brothers came to Kansas together and remained in one another's company until 1873, when Henry went further west. They had not seen one another since that time.
While Miss Esther Clark of this city was visiting in California several years ago - the visit that resulted in "The Call of Kansas", the poem that gave her eminence among Kansas writers - she saw Henry Oesting on a voyage from Los Angeles to San Diego. His resemblance to his brother was so remarkable that Miss Clark spoke to him and discovered the relationship. The meeting caused the brothers to renew correspondence.
The Tribune's informant also says that William Oesting was the father by his first wife of a son who lives in Wisconsin. He was the child of Mr. Oesting's first wife who died when she was 21 years old and whose body is buried here.

William was buried in Cementerio Lindo, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA.[9]
