Biography

Mary of Burgundy was the only child of Charles the Bold and reigned over the Low Countries from 1477 until her death. She was also known as Mary the Rich.

She married Archduke Maximilian of Austria at Ghent on 16 August 1477. The couple had three children:

• Philip the Handsome (22 July 1478 – 25 September 1506), who succeeded his mother as Philip IV of Burgundy, and became Philip I of Castile by marriage to Joanna of Castile.[7]
• Margaret (10 January 1480 – 1 December 1530), married to 1) Juan, Prince of Asturias, the son and heir of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile and 2) Philibert II, Duke of Savoy.
• Francis (2 September 1481 – 26 December 1481).
