Joane Okeden was born circa 1526, likely at Ellingham, and was the daughter of John Okeden of Ellingham (who was aged 18 in February 1517/8) and Jane Mollineux. She was likely younger than her sister Agnes, being named after her in their father's will.
She married Henry Ringwood. Their family was listed in an undated pedigree compiled in 1634:[1]
Her father John Okeden of Hardebridge, Hampshire, made his will 21 August 1556 and 28 October 1556. He left to his daughter "Johan Ryngewood... the two hyne gardeynes that stand betwene me and Harrye Crownes forene", and made a stipulation regarding "Joane Ryngewood the wife of Harry Ringewood foresaide and Charles Ryngewood their sonne". Henry Ryngewood was one of the witnesses.[2]
The visitation listed another (presumably second) wife of Henry Ringwood. Joane may have died relatively young.
In 1596 Philip Okeden stated that he was eighty years old.[3] Philip was likely a younger brother to William, based on the pedigree order. Their father John was aged 18 in 1517/8. Philip's age was likely exagerated slightly, though this does suggest William may have been the oldest child, not just oldest son. Joane was likely younger than Agnes, being listed after her in their father's will.
Versions of the Okeden pedigree published in 1833[4] and 1913[5] cite the Harleian manuscript no. 1544. They do not name any Joane Okeden.
Another version of this pedigree was published in 1868 in The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset, including information from "the Visitation of Hantas (1634), the Registers of Crichel, &c". This pedigree contains further information, though it's unclear where exactly what information came from. There is at least one additional error here, stating that John (son of Philip) had a daughter Joan who married Henry Ringwood. Joan was actually the daughter of this John (and great aunt of the younger John).[6]
This pedigree was cited in The Ogden Family, and may be the only factual source cited for the early Okedens in that genealogy. It's likely the 1868 version of the pedigree was used, and it includes the mistaken parentage of Joan (Okeden) Ringwood. The fraudster Gustave Anjou made other contributions to that book. See next research note.
Joan did exist, however the fraudster Gustave Anjou, probably using the 1868 version of the Okeden pedigree, had her as the daughter of the wrong John Okeden. See the previous research notes and research notes on her father's page.
The Ogden Family in America was published in 1907 several years after the death of principal author William Ogden Wheeler. Wheeler had not found immigrant John Ogden's English origins, but after Wheeler's death, his book was completed and published by others who "made [the] unfortunate mistake [of] unsuspectingly enlisting the assistance of Gustave Anjou, possibly the most notorious generator of fraudulent genealogical records and pedigrees of recent times."[7] As a result of Anjou's involvement, the book presented an account of English origins that cited nonexistent parish registers and other records and "have been demonstrated to be without any basis in fact,"[7] but that may be encountered in Internet genealogies and other works derived from the 1907 book.
