Jean[3] emigrated from Scotland to Australia with her brother Joseph Sinclar Ogilvie[4]who was also a handloom weaver [5]and his wife Betsy. They both were still quite young in 1859, Jean being 26 and Joseph was about 22 years old. They both may have decided to look for a place where they might make a better living for themselves. Assisted immigration helped provide them the means to do that. Another brother John Ogilvie would leave Scotland 22 years later for Ontario Canada on the Lake Nepigon arriving on 29 of September 1881 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
[6]
Jean emigrated from Scotland to Austrialia in 1859 aboard the Palmyra[7]
She arrived in Australia on 27 May 1859'.[3]
Marriage
She married George Down b.1833 in Okehampton, Devon, England, the United Kingdom to John Down and Jane Martyn,31 Mar 1862 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
[8][9]
Her marriage to George seems to have been one full of trials, quite literally. Shortly after they married George was indicted for abusive behavior toward his sister Jemima Phillips who he was listed as living at the time.
In 1866 she would again face the legal system and her husband's errant ways as it was then that he was charged with armed robbery and sentenced to 3 yrs in the Parramatta Gaol.[10] The space between their children George and David bares this out.
She would bury her husband at a young age, he was thirty-six years old and died of shock after falling from a wagon. He died in June of 1877 when his youngest was about four.
Jean is found in 1891 residing at 131 Sloane St., Goulburn, Argyle, New South Wales, Australia with one male and two females.[16]
