James Ogilvy, 3rd Lord Ogilvy of Airlie.
John was born about 1475 eldest son to Sir John Lord Ogilvy of Airlie and his wife Marjory Graham.
About 1484 John married Isobel Lindsay, daughter of Alexander, 7th Earl of Crawford.[1]

Upon the death of his father, a Special service of Retour was held on 13 October 1505 in favour of James Ogilvy as heir of the deceased John, Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, his father, in the barony of Lintrathen.[3] The resultant brieve furth of chancery, dated 6 Nov 1505,was made in favour of James Ogilvy as son and heir of the deceased John, Lord Ogilvy, in the barony of Lintrathen upon which an Instrument of Sasine was performed on 8 Nov 1505.[4] At Rescobie on 5 May 1506 James was retoured seven months after death of father John in Kirkton of Kinnell and barony of Rescobie.[5] The jury of the Inquest of Retour comprised ; Alexander Lindsay of Ouchirmonsie, Alexander Guthrie of that Ilk, Sir James Auchterlony of Kellie, , John Erskine of Dun, John Ogilvy of Inverquharity, David Rossie of that Ilk, Walter Lichton of Ulishavin, Alexander Barclay of Mathers, Robert Stratchan of Balhousie, Walter Moncur of Slanis, Alexander Burnet of Leys, William Auchinleck, David Rynd in Carse, David Lindsay in Hauch, and Thomam Speid of Cookston(by Brechin).
On 3 Feb 1606 James Lord Ogilvy of Airlie appeared on the Parliamentary Register of Lords.[6]
At Dundee on 6 Jun 1508 John Ogilvy in Craig of Glenisla made Letters of Reversion to James Lord Ogilvy of the lands of Hallyards of Ballindoch - except for an acre thereof reserved to the Lord Ogilvy - for 400 merks Scots. Upon this by an Instrument of consignation on 10 November 1509. James, Lord Ogylvy, met with John Ogilvy, his uncle on his mother's side, and deposited the sum of 400 merks Scots in a box on the altar of St.Paul within the parish church of Dundee, for redemption of the said lands until such time as he receive the letter of reversion pertaining thereto; which letter the said John alleged had been given to Andrew, Lord Gray, by order of the said Lord Ogilvy . In the presence of John and notaries, Lord Ogilvy counted the 400 merks and shut them in a box which he placed upon St.Paul's altar in the church; but John refused to accept this as a suitable place whereupon Lord Ogilvy opened the box and placed the money in the communal chest belonging to the burgh of Dundee in the porch of church on 10 November 1509. At the parish church of Airlie on 13 May 1514, Helen Cosour widow and executrix of the deceased John Ogilvy of Hallyards finalised the resignation of Hallyards with consent of Gilbert Menzies, provost of Aberdeen and John Mar, bailie. [7] John Ogilvy in Craig of Glenisla / of Hallyards was a son of Sir James Lord Ogilvy of Airlie and Helen Douglas.
James Lord Ogilvy of Airlie died about 1524. His eldest son James was served his heir on 19 Nov 1524.[8]
