Biography

Family of Origin

Elizabeth was born about 1808 in Carteret County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Abner Oglesby (ca. 1775-1820) and Dorcas Garner (ca. 1782-1870). The main evidence we have for her family of origin is an 1810 Newport River, Carteret census record,[1] confirming Ogelsbeys in the area then and age bracket counts from the same showing three male siblings under age 10, and one female siblings (plus Elizabeth, presumptively) under age 10, along with a parental unit ages 26-44; next, Abner's wife, Dorcas (Elizabeth's presumptive mother), shows up in the 1820 census as "Dorcas Garner," (unclear why she would revert to her maiden name) adjacent to Levi Oglesby, and with one male in the new 10 and under age group, without any other males (suggesting that she had been widowed), and herself (still between 26 and 44 years of age), along with 1 male and 1 female enslaved persons under 13, and one female enslaved person in the 26-44 years of age group;[2] but then in the 1850 census as "Dorcas Oglesby," with one son Abner Oglesby.[3] A brief note about the family name at the time of Elizabeth's marriage is in the Research Notes.

Family of Consent

Lewis M McCain and Elizabeth Oglesby married on 29 Nov 1825 in Carteret, North Carolina.[4][5]

From marriage records, it appears that Elizabeth and Lewis McCain were married between 1825 and 1841, as her husband remarried 9 Jan 1841 to Polly Garner. Thus it is presumed that Elizabeth most likely died in 1840.

Her husband's will probate was 1844 Carteret, North Carolina.[6]

Research Notes

  • It is noted that the bondsman at the marriage was David Garner. His exact relationship is unknown, but her father appears to have already died by 1820.
  • The will document would be useful to inform anything about the children. Since her mother had enslaved persons indicated on the 1820 census, the disposition is unknown with no additional documentation having emerged, thus far.
