Biography

William Old was born in Roslin, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland on 10 October 1830 in Roslin, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. [1]

He was baptised on 30 October 1830 in Roslin with, as witnesses, Dr John Renton and George Sutherland. [1]

He was the second child of David Old (born 27 March 1800) and Jane Waters (born 22 February 1802).

He had two brothers:

  1. David Old (born 13 December 1827) [2]
  2. Allan Old (born 05 July 1833) [3]

and no sisters.

When he was 54 years old, his father David Old died on 30 July 1885. [4]

When he was 55 years old, his mother Jane Walters died on 24 January 1886. [5]

On 24 June 1853, he married Janet Stratton Craig (1830) in Temple, Midlothian, Scotland. He was 22 years old when he married Janet Stratton Craig, who was 22 years old at that time. [6]

He had ten children with Janet Stratton Craig:

  3. Jane Old (born 19 March 1858) [9]
  4. John Craig Old (born 17 April 1860) [10]

  9. Martin Fauchie Old (born 02 November 1871) [15] and

On 30 March 1851, he worked as a Cloth bleacher. He was 20 years old at that point. [17]

On 07 November 1853, he worked as a Bleacher. He was 23 years old at that point. [7]

On 17 April 1860, he worked as a Powder maker. He was 29 years old at that point. [10]

On 07 April 1861, he worked as a Powder Maker. He was 30 years old at that point. [18]

On 02 June 1867, he worked as a Powder Maker. He was 36 years old at that point. [13]

On 20 August 1868, he worked as a Powder maker. He was 37 years old at that point. [14]

On 02 April 1871, he worked as a Gardener. He was 40 years old at that point. [19]

On 02 November 1871, he worked as a Gardener. He was 41 years old at that point. [15]

On 05 April 1891, he worked as a Gunpowder maker. He was 60 years old at that point. [20]

On 19 January 1899, he worked as a Gunpowder Maker. He was 68 years old at that point. [21]

On 31 March 1901, he worked as a Gunpowder maker. He was 70 years old at that point. [20]

On 05 July 1910, he died at Springfield Place in Roslin, Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. He was described as 79 years old, a gunpowder maker (retired) and the widower of Jessie Craig. His parents were described as David Old, Cooper (deceased) and Jane Waters (deceased). The cause of death was cerebral haemorrhage, one month as certified by James Cameron, F.R.C.P. The death was registered on 06 July 1910 at Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland by his daughter, Agnes Hardie resident at 72 Clerk Street, Loanhead. [22]

His wife Janet Stratton Craig died on 24 May 1902, eight years before him. [23]
