Biography

Fredrik VII, Konge af Danmark.

Frederik Carl Christian was born on 6 October 1808 at Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, Denmark to King Christian VIII of Denmark and Duchess Charlotte Frederica of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

Frederick married Princess Vilhelmine Marie of Denmark, his second cousin, on 1 November 1828 in Copenhagen. They separated in 1834 and divorced in 1837. Frederik married Duchess Caroline Charlotte Mariane of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 10 June 1841, but they divorced in 1846. On 7 August 1850 Frederik married Louisa Christina Rasmussen. HIs three marriages produced no legitimate issue.

Frederick became King of Denmark on 20 January 1848. He reigned as King of Denmark from 1848 to 1863 under the name Frederik VII (English: Frederick VII). He was the last Danish monarch of the older Royal branch of the House of Oldenburg and also the last king of Denmark to rule as an absolute monarch. During his reign, he signed a constitution that established a Danish parliament and made the country a constitutional monarchy.

The fact that Frederick reached middle age without producing an heir, meant that Prince Christian of Glücksburg (1818–1906), the descendant of a cousin of King Frederik VI, was chosen as his heir-presumptive in 1852.

King Frederik VII died on 15 November 1863 in Glücksburg following an attack of erysipelas and was interred in Roskilde Cathedral. Prince Christian succeded him upon the throne as King Christian IX.
