Biography

Sarah was born in 1862 at Chatham, Ontario to Alfred and Mary Anne Oldershaw.

Sarah is present on the 1871 Census. Her father Alfred, a bricklayer and plasterer, was living in the town of Chatham in Kent County, Ontario. He is identified as married, but wife Mary Anne is not present on the Census. At home are daughters Sarah (8), Emma (5), Letta Ann (3) and infant son Alfred. Also at the residence is 49 year old Edward Oldershaw, relationship unknown.[1]

Sarah moved to Victoria about 1875 with her parents and her siblings.

On January 27, 1879, at the age of 16, Sarah Maryan married Charles McNaughton at Victoria.[2] They had three children while living in New Westminster[3] before Charles, a jeweller died after a 3 year illness with tuberculosis.

In 1891, Sarah, now widowed with her 3 children: Bruce (8), Charles (5) and Mary (3). Also at the residence was 28 year old Kate Thorpe, a companion to Sarah. They were living on Yates Street in Victoria.[4]

On November 10, 1891, at Victoria[5], Sarah married Captain Caleb E McDougall, former master of the sealer E B Marvin. [6] After Caleb's death, Sarah remarried for a 3rd time to Robert William Ward on November 29, 1894 in Victoria.[7]

In 1901 Sarah and her husband Robert Ward at the house on Yates Street. Son Bruce, now a dentist, Charles and Mary were also resident. Katie Thorpe, Sarah's companion was still with the family as well as a boarder, Septimus Ward, 28.[8]

In 1911 Charles was a dentist and was living at the home of his mother and her 3rd husband Robert Ward at 303 Langford Street in Victoria. [9][10]

In 1921, Sarah and Robert, a barber, were living alone in the home on Yates Street.[11]

Sarah died in 1952 at the age of 90 in Colwood, BC. She was buried at Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.[12]
