Rhoda Eleanor Oldham was born in 1889 in Combrook, Warwickshire, England to Edward Fines Oldham and Rebecca (Hughes) Oldham. Her birth was registered in the last quarter of the year in Stratford On Avon.[1]
In 1891 Rhoda E Oldham (age 1) lived in Combrook with her father Edward F (26, Carpenter), mother Rebecca (23), two older siblings: Edward P (5, Scholar) and Gertrude A (3), aunt Mary A Oldham (18, Teacher in National School), and farm servant George Golby (13).[2]
In 1901 Rhoda E Oldham (age 11) lived in Combrook with her father Edward F (36), mother Rebecca (34), seven siblings: Edward P (15), Adeline M (9), Ellen L (5), Walter E (4), Frederick J (3), Violet E (1), and an unnamed infant brother (0), as well as visitor Alice Scarsbrook (26, Sick Nurse).[3]
In 1911 Rhoda Oldham (age 21) was a house maid in the household of Johey Charles Abbotts in Chigwell, Essex.[4]
Rhoda E Oldham married Francis L Baynes [aka Baines] in 1914. The marriage was registered in the second quarter of the year in Southwark, London.[5]
Rhoda and Francis had one son: Francis Trevean Baines (24 Sep 1915 - 1987)
Rhoda's husband was an architect (sir Frank Baines KCVO), and they lived in an estate in southern Cornwall until his death in 1933 forced her to sell it. Shortly afterwards, in 1936, she purchased The Cedars in Coggeshall, Essex and moved there with her son. According to the brochure for the sale of the house that Harrods' auctioneering branch put out, “The Cedars is a pleasant, old house in one of the most picturesque villages of Essex, lying in a countryside which is notably one of the prettiest in the Eastern Counties. It is a property which should strongly appeal to anyone seeking a residence of character with an old world garden, within 45 miles of London.”[6]
