Esther Oldman (called Hester in some records) was reported to be aged 73 when she died on July 20, 1770. If correct, she would have been born about 1697, or during the second half of 1696. She would have been born in Lewes, Sussex County, Pennsylvania (which later became part of Delaware), where her parents were then living.
Her marriage to Daniel Hoodt was authorized by Philadelphia Monthly Meeting after they made their second declaration at the April 24 meeting. They were reported married at the May 30 Monthly Meeting, so they were married between April 24 and May 30, probably sometime in May. No marriage certificate has been found. [1] Esther and Daniel had five children; Esther outlived them all.
After her husband's death, Hester continued to live in Philadelphia. She lived on Front Street in Chestnut Ward. She was called the "Widow Hoodt" in the 1754 tax list[2] [3] In October 1765, the house she was living in on Front, between Market and Chestnut, was advertised for sale. [4]
Esther made her will on 15 July 1764 in Philadelphia. She is called both Hester and Esther in this will, with her last name given as both "Hoot" and "Hoedt". As all her children had died, she left her estate to four grandchildren, children of her daughter Elizabeth, who died in 1763: Joseph Trotter, Mary Trotter, Daniel Trotter and Benjamin Trotter. [5]
Hester died 30 July 1770, with her death recorded in Quaker records and her age given as 73. [6]
