Benedict Oliger was "born in France in 1772. He and his family came to New York City 12/21/1830 on the De Rham. Legend says they sold their belongings before starting the voyage, except for a team of horses and a wagon. Upon getting to their port of exit in France, they were able to sell the horses, but not the wagon which was put aboard the ship and brought to America. Arriving in New York with limited funds, the family worked there until the oldest son could be sent to Cincinnati, OH (their original goal) to seek a place for everyone. He soon sent word for the others to drive the wagon as far as Pittsburgh, PA and float on a raft from there to Cincinnati, which they did in 1832. The raft was then used as temporary shelter at the docks until suitable living accommodations could be found. They worked for William Henry Harrison (338ma), future President of the United States, near Cleaves, OH; but alleged he was not kind to them and moved on to a farm near Cheviot, OH." [19]
