Mary was born on 6 October 1870 at an unknown location. She is thought to be the daughter of Matilda Evelyn (Jacobs) Jones, based on mtDNA matches between Peter Hunt and Gladys (Ferguson) Gray (1911-2006) who therefore have a common female ancestor, Eliza Jane (Green) Jacobs (1826-).

Mary's age at marriage in 1886 is given as 17. Date from Ethan Hunt.^[1]
