Walter was born in 1794 at Slainsfield, Ford parish, Northumberland.[1] In about 1820, he appears to have married Esther (also spelled Easther) who, according to the 1851 Census, was born in Shoreswood. No record has been found of their marriage.
Their daughter Esther was born in 1821 while they were living in Shoreswood.[2] Esther was baptized in the Presbyterian Church at Berwick, quite a long walk (six miles) from Shoreswood. In the record of baptism, Walter was described as a collier and was most likely working at the Shoreswood colliery. Their daughter Alice was born in 1823 at Redhouse, Scremerston and baptized at the Spittal Presbyterian meeting house which was about two miles away.[3] As there were several coal mines operating around Scremerston, we can presume he was working in one of them at the time of Alice's birth, most likely the nearby Restoration Pit. From this point they seemed to continue attending the Presbyterian meeting house at Spittal. Their daughter Jane was born in 1826 while they were living in Thornton.[4] Walter may have been working again at the nearby Shoreswood Colliery. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1828 at which time they were residing near the Allerdean Colliery.[5] While they were still living at Allerdean, their daughter Mary was born in 1830[6] and their son George was born in 1833.[7]
By 1841, Walter was working at Ford Moss Colliery as a miner and living with his family including children William, Esther, Mary, and George.[8] By 1851, Walter had retired and was living with his wife Esther, daughter Mary, and granddaughter Jane in Broomridge, located about a mile south of Ford village.[9] His occupation was recorded as "pauper." He died in 1852. [10]
